Michigan tackling details of system
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said he scripts practice to last two hours.
On Thursday, the Wolverines' first spring practice in pads, it went about a half-hour longer.
"Our players are in pretty good shape," Rodriguez said during a news conference Thursday evening. "I think they felt today, more than any other practice, that our conditioning still has a long way to go. "The intensity was pretty good. We didn't do a lot live, because I want the guys to know some of the basic fundamentals first."
So that's what's taking so much time.
Rodriguez and his staff have the challenging job of installing a new offense and defense, and that has inherent difficulties for all involved.
"I always tell them if you don't know where you're going, run in place," Rodriguez said. "So there was quite a bit of guys running in place."
While the running backs got a boost with Kevin Grady returning from a hamstring injury that held him out of the first practice, Rodriguez said the Wolverines have lost tailback Carlos Brown for most of spring drills. Brown broke a finger lifting weights.
Losing Pryor
As expected, Rodriguez had little to say about quarterback Terrelle Pryor 's announcement he had chosen Ohio State over Michigan.
"I only talk about the guys who play for Michigan," Rodriguez said, tersely.
Extra point
Rodriguez said the Wolverines plan to have a final scrimmage open to the public on April 12. The venue and starting time have not yet been determined.
Michigan Stadium is not an option because it is under construction.
