Nathan Smith will fly to Nashville, Tenn., today on official business for the Indianapolis Colts -- not your typical day for a Northside Middle School eighth grader.
Smith was selected by Muncie Community Schools to represent the Colts in hand delivering Indianapolis' bid to host the 2012 Super Bowl to the Tennessee Titans headquarters.
"He's a fine young man," Muncie Community Schools Superintendent Marlin Creasy said. "What the Colts asked for was that we were sure to have very good citizens and students. And Nathan is that. He's a solid student and a great representative of the community."
Smith, one of 32 student delegates chosen from school systems across the state, will meet with Titans owner Bud Adams to present him the bid. He and Creasy will leave at 6:45 a.m. today from the Indianapolis International Airport.
The Northwest Airlines flight will take him to Nashville where Smith will meet with Adams in the early afternoon. The two will return to Muncie tonight.
The Colts picked MCS to participate in the program, and after Creasy was contacted by the Colts, he asked the middle school principals to compile a pool of eighth graders. Smith was randomly chosen from that group.
Smith, the son of MCS school board member Kevin Smith, and Creasy went to the Colts complex on Sunday where he selected No. 27, which was assigned to the Tennessee Titans in the random draw.
Today is the day the NFL requires owners to receive the Colts' bid. That will give the owners time to review proposals before the owners meeting on May 21 in Atlanta. The owners will then vote to decide which city will host the 2012 Super Bowl.
If Indianapolis earns the Super Bowl bid, Smith will be a student ambassador for Indianapolis and will be involved with the Super Bowl planning.
